Africa. Resident in southern African(Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe)with isolated pockets in Kenya and Ethiopia

British Occurence

A member of the "stiff tails" like the Ruddy Duck. It is a diving duck and requires deep water and plenty of space and cover so it is not widely kept in captivity and escapes are seemingly rarely encountered. As a non-migratory species it is never likely to occur naturally.
