North America. Two races One breeds in south-central US and winters in central America whilst the other breeds along the Atlantic seaboard and winters in Florida and the Bahamas.

British Occurence

Voe, Shetland. trapped, 28 May 1972: Carnforth. Lancashire, 2-6 April 1974; St. Mary’s, Isles of Scilly. 25 June 1978: Yell, Shetland, trapped, 9-27 July 1978: Fair Isle, Shetland. trapped, 19-22 June 1979; Noss. Shetland, 8 June 1981.

Considered an unlikely vagrant to Britain and commonly kept in captivity.
