North America. Two races which together breed from central Canada eastwards to Newfoundland and winter around the Gulf of Mexico
Found as a tideline corpse on Walney Island, Cumbria in May 1976. Assigned to Category D. It was concluded that the bird had probably died on board a ship (outside British waters) and washed overboard so the record was rejected as a definite natural vagrant.
