South America. Northern South America east of the Andes and south to Paraguay but excluding eastern Brazil. The species is said to be patchily distributed over this range.
Not especially frequent in European collections and so far I have not found any references to escaped birds. Unsurprisingly, given the species' natural range, it needs protection in the winter and is unlikely to survive long in the wild in Britian.
